Re: Mailbox
Security
Dear Ms.
Sexton:
At
the tenant meeting Monday one of the tenants reported that law enforcement
recovered some of the tenant's sensitive mail from a thief who was also in
possession of other stolen mail. The tenant said that there was no suggestion
of theft from a USPS facility and that the police believe it was stolen from
the mailbox units here and demonstrated how easy it could be done. Ross took
measurements of his own mailbox and found that the engagement of the latch is
only about 1 mm. The doors can probably be easily opened and re-closed with a
screwdriver and the mailboxes in all six buildings show obvious evidence of at
least the attempt of forcible entry, including your very own. Mail is stolen
for purposes of identity theft and also to wash checks to substitute others as
the recipient. The consequences of identity theft can be very expensive and a
lot of trouble to deal with if new account numbers must be obtained and credit
records corrected.
As
you may know, the post office now has new standards (4C) for apartment mailbox
design that make them more secure. Replacement apartment wall panel mailbox
units are available. Please advise us as to whether the owners would be willing
to replace the existing mailbox units with modern secure units.
Thank
you.
Sincerely,
Mona
