John Muir Drive
Parking Conditions
The Honorable Sean Elsbernd
Board of Supervisors,
City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 244
San Francisco CA 94102
Dear Supervisor Elsbernd:
This is a follow to the concerns you expressed at the October 6 meeting
of the finance committee about parking nuisances on John Muir Drive.
Our Department is working on a proposal that would address the main
parking problems on John Muir Drive. We agree that the non-residential portion
of John Muir Drive has become a staging ground for commercial vehicles and
other parking activities unrelated to enjoyment of the Lake. In response to a
request from the Lake Merced Task Force, we are proposing to prohibit parking
on the south side of John Muir Drive at all times and prohibit parking on the
north side of the street from 10 PM to 6 AM everyday.
These prohibitions would extend from Lake Merced Boulevard to a point
east of the Lakewood Apartments frontage, leaving residential parking
unaffected. Prohibiting parking at night would eliminate the tendency of
certain vehicles to use this street for long-term parking. Daytime parking for visitors to Lake Merced
would continue to be available on the north side of John Muir Drive.
We are planning to begin
legislation process for these changes shortly.
If you have any concerns or comments, please call Ricardo Olea of my
staff at 556-2310.
Very truly yours,
Bond M.Yee Acting Executive Director
