Letter, Haley Gonzaba to Ross Wilkinson, March 4, 2008
Dear Ms.
Gonzaba:
In response to your letter to Ross Wilkinson (ref. 5), the letter that you were responding to (ref. 4) was a letter from Lakewood Tenants Association, not Ross Wilkinson as an individual. The door survey was performed by both Ross Wilkinson and me. We were not aware that Lakewood was only performing quarterly inspections of the security doors and we believe that that period of time is far from adequate. Previous discussions with the management resulted in assurances that the "courtesy patrol" was responsible to check all the doors every day during their rounds and to report doors that required maintenance. To accomplish that purpose, it was obviously necessary to label every security door frame with an identifying number so that your courtesy patrol, your maintenance department and tenants could all have the same understanding of which door was being reported. Lakewood made a commitment to establish and maintain such labeling but that commitment has not been kept. So I am sorry but I cannot accept your assumption that we would attest to a characterization of the maintenance of the property as "well maintained, clean and safe."
We have never physically applied any numbering system of our own to your property and would not presume any right to do so. There is more than one numbering system applied to some doors because Lakewood has devised more than one numbering system and applied it to the property at different times, not removing the first numbering system before applying the second. None of that is our doing.
We will look with interest at any letter that may be forthcoming as to approval of the conversion of the two particular garage doors to emergency exits. However, be advised that, if there is such a letter, we believe the Department of Building Inspection violated a clear commitment to Lakewood Tenants Association to make no such approval final without prior consultation with us. Furthermore, I am sure that you would concede that both emergency evacuation safety and security are desirable and necessary and that sacrificing one for the other is to be avoided whenever possible. We agree with you that tenants and management should all work together to maintain Lakewood and create a pleasant and peaceful community and we appreciate your recognition of our efforts. You have not yet expressed any desire to accept our offer to work together to evaluate what alternatives might be available to see that both safety and security requirements are met for the two individual doors in question. The offer still stands.
Sincerely,
